Strains!
Strains, strands, cultivars…. whatever a consumer chooses to call it, cannabis flower has a name! From OG Kush to London Pound Cake, and every funky combination you could possibly think of, strain names hold a special place in the hearts of consumers. Some will only touch Gelato strains, while others want something new every visit to the dispensary. Lucky for both kinds of consumers, cultivators are churning out an exciting array of strains derived from classic genetics and new creations alike.
Brightfield Group tracks how strains are moving on shelf across the county in US Distribution Trends. New strain names are coming to shelves every month, but consumers will only know so many strains. They often will look to what was crossed to create a given strain before buying. Our methodology allows us to track the strains crossed to create these interesting strains, providing an understanding how major strains and their derivatives are moving on shelf.
The Major Strains
The top three distributed strains nationwide are Gelato, OG Kush, and Wedding Cake. These strains are enjoyed on their own and have been crossed countless times to make other strains. Gelato itself is a derivative of OG Kush, with Gelato’s lineage being Thin Mint X Sunset Sherbet, and Thin Mint is a Durban Poison X OG Kush cross!
